How we live matters

I just came across this short video on Leadership.  I really like it.  It makes you think about how you live your life, and how that affects you and those around you.  When making any decision, we not only have to look at the action, but also look at any and all possible consequences, and make sure we are willing to committ to those consequences.  Remember, even inaction has consequences.  If you do nothing today, it has consequences.  All things have them.  Decide if you are or not willing to committ to those.  If you are not, you need to find a different action.  That little lie you told to the client, even though it seemed like nothing, it has consequences, even if it just weakens you and who you are.  Start looking at all the things you do, say , and decide, and this will make you a better and stronger person, and build your business.

Happy Holidays!

15 minute workout

ROUTINE: Complete either all of the shoulders/arms exercises or all of the butt/legs exercises, using a pair of 5- to 10-pound dumbbells. Work both muscle groups twice a week.

Shoulders & Arms

(Perform as a circuit; do 4 sets, 12 to 15 reps each)

  1. Lateral raise

Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding dumbbells at sides, with palms facing in. Lift arms out to shoulder height, keeping elbows soft, palms facing forward. Hold for 1 count and then lower. For last set in circuit, do 15 reps using only right arm, then switch sides and repeat.

  2. Biceps curl into shoulder press

    a. Hold dumbbells in front of thighs with palms facing forward. Bend elbows and curl weights toward shoulders.

    b. Once weights reach shoulder height, turn palms forward, bring elbows up to shoulder height, and lift weights together overhead. Lower to start and repeat. For final circuit, do 15 reps using only right arm, then switch sides and repeat.

  3. Triceps kickback

Stand with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, holding dumbbells with palms facing sides. Bend from waist until upper body is almost parallel to floor, keeping back straight. Bend elbows up to ribs, then slowly straighten arms behind you, keeping upper arms still. Bring weights toward chest and repeat. For final circuit, do 15 reps using only right arm, then switch sides and repeat.

Butt & Legs
  1. Single-leg squat

Stand facing away from a chair, holding dumbbells at sides. Step forward about 2 feet. Place top of right foot on seat and slowly bend left knee into a squat, being sure not to let knee go past toes. Stand back up. Do 12 reps. Squat one more time with left leg and hold in down position for about 20 seconds. Switch legs; repeat.

  2. Wall sit with body weight

Stand with your back and butt against a wall, feet hip-width apart and about 1 foot away from wall. Bend knees and slide body down wall until knees are almost at 90 degrees and in line with ankles. Hold for 30 seconds. Do 3 reps.

  3. Single-leg deadlift

Stand with feet together, dumbbells at sides. Lift right foot off floor and lean forward from hips, keeping abs engaged and back straight, until weights are in line with left shin. Pull through glutes to lift body back up. Do 12 reps. Lean forward one more time and hold in down position for 20 seconds. Switch legs; repeat.

Essence of Leaders 11-26-07

Here is another video I just came across.  I really liked it.  It is all about being a good leader and business owner.  We all are business owners.  We have to promote ourselves and our businesses.  If we want to be a contender, we have to put ourselves out there.  We have to talk to the people and let them know and show them that we care about them and their needs, not just ours.  Show our people, clients and others, that they are very important to us and our future.  Build relationships.  I am sure you will like this video.  Peace and God Bless.

Leader 11-26-07

Here is a good little video on leadership, and how to lead your troups into battle, and come out successful.  It is based on Santa and how he gets things done in the North Pole.  I thought that it was cute, but it has allot of good info for us to follow.  Think about it, in one way or another, you are a leader.  You have someone looking up to you, whether it is employees, co workers, family, children, friends; someone values your opinions and the way you treat them.  I hope you enjoy.

A Different Christmas Poem 11-23-07

Here is a little poem that my wife sent me and I just wanted to share.  May you be blessed and bless others this Holiday Season.  Earl The Pearl Sorrells

A Different Christmas Poem - Received from a very dear friend. LA

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,  I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,  My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.  Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight.   The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.   The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.   My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.   A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old, Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold. Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled, Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.   "What are you doing?" I asked without fear, "Come in this moment, it's freezing out here! Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"   For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts.. To the window that danced with a warm fire's light Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,  I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night." "It's my duty to stand at the front of the line, That separates you from the darkest of times. No one had to ask or beg or implore me,  I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me."   " My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December," Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."   My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ', And now it is my turn and so, here I am. I've not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.   Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red, white, and blue... an American flag. I can live through the cold and the being alone, Away from my family, my house and my home.   I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing another, Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..   Who stand at the front against any and all, To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall." "So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright, Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."   "But isn't there something I can do, at the least,  "Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast? It seems all too little for all that you've done, For being away from your wife and your son."   Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, "Just tell us you love us, and never forget. To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone, To stand your own watch, no matter how long. For when we come home, either standing or dead, To know you remember we fought and we bled. Is payment enough, and with that we will trust, That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Antelope Valley, Ca Business and Industry

The AV covers more than 3000 sq miles in the Grater Los Angeles region.  It has lots of affordable land for commercial and industrial.  The AV includes 5 incorporated cities and numerous unincorporated communities.  The AV used to be dependent only on the areospace industry.  Now, the valley has made significant progress in diversifying its industrial base.  "Combined with a fast growing retail market, business and industry are transforming the valley into a strong, indepentent and influential economic region.", Antelope Valley Guide.

The total population is approaching 450,000.  Almost $3.7 billion in sales were taken in 2006, a 12.3% increase over 2005, and over the last 2 year period, grew 30.6%

Commercial and residential development have been moving at record levels in the Palmdale and Lancaster areas in recent years, according to California Economic Forecast.  Retail growth is strong, and vacancy rates for retail has dropped to less than 3%.  Population growth has grown, and even with the doom sayers saying housing is going down, there is still demand for both new and existing homes.  Home sales in 2005 and 2006 remained at record levels, but 2007 brought in the long expected real estate price correction.  Real Estate forecasts are offered up by many, but nobody can be certain what its condition will be in the short term, however over the long haul, real estate has always been a great investment.

Some milestones for the AV has been:  A new $3.5 million University Center opened on the old fairgrounds.  They offer students advanced degree programs from CSU Bakersfield and CSU Fresno.  There is a new Countrywide building covering 13 acres , for loan processing; a new Loews in Lancaster; a Regent Aerospace 80000 sq ft manufacturing facility.

As the population increases, new employers are coming in, taking advantage of low land prices, attractive location and the new workforce.  The Lancaster Business Park  has more than 100 employers with over 4100 employees.  The Fox Field Industrial Corridor and the North Valley Industrial Center is under rapid growth.  The new Lancaster Spectrum Center got its approval, including a La Quinta Inn and 125000 sq ft of retail space.  There was another 250000 sq ft under development in 2006.  The highly anticipated AV Hospital addition is adding 75000sq ft.

More than 500000 sq ft of entertainment, including dining and retail space are under way at Lancaster' Front Row Center in 2007.  The Children's Center of the AV's new $2.5 million home in downtown Lancaster has opened.

Palmdale has enjoyed it progress also.  Delta Scientific Corp. opened a second location in the Fairway Business Park, and a $ 10 million transportation center was built.  The city's Dry Town Water Park and Mining Co. opened, and an outdoor amphitheater and pool were opened at Marie Kerr Park.  All over the city, industrial, commercial and office space totaling over 2 million sq ft has been completed or approved.

Palmdale's Foreign Trade Zone grew to include more than 90 acres at Mojave Airport, and the first phase of the downtown revitalization was completed.  FedEx opened a 55000 sq ft distribution center in the Fairway Business Park, and a new Wal Mart supercenter opened, for a total of 4 WalMart supercenters in-the AV.  A several million dollar renovation project occurred at the AV Mall.  Also, the massive 7200 home Ritter Rance in underway.

The Palmdale Trade and Commerce Center has numerous projects under way, including a 69000 sq ft office condominium, an 18100 sq ft professional office building, and 7 medical office buildings totaling 52100 sq ft.  The Palmdale Regional Hospital is under way, and nearly 500000 sq ft of industrial and commercial buildings are being done.

The total permit value for new commercial and industrial construction has been fairly constant since 2000.  Lancaster had $225 million of investment and Palmdale had $235 million. Industrial lots of all shapes, sizes and locations are selling quickly.  The demand for inexpensive industrial land is growing.  The region can even help out with Los Angeles needing more industrial space.

Eating right on Thanksgiving and any holiday.

  1. I just came across this on About.com. It is written by Jennife Scott. It is about eating right on Thanksgiving and some tips to help.  I just thought I would share.  Some good info.  No matter what, if you fall, get up and get going again.  To you health.  Earl The Pearl Sorrells

  2. "Don't save up

  3. Don't save calories from earlier meals for "the big one." You'll inevitably get too hungry and overeat to compensate for missing those meals. Thanksgiving day should include a substantial, healthy breakfast and a normal lunch. Then, you won't be too famished to practice portion control when dinnertime arrives.

  4. Make Like a Rabbit

That is, help yourself to a veggie-filled salad or raw vegetables, such as carrots and celery, before the main meal. Doing so will curb your appetite, provide you with extra nutrients, help you feel fuller later, and give you something to munch while others are eating high-cal hors d'oeuvres.
  5. Figure Out What's Filling

If you don't know which dishes to avoid, think filling -- the ones you eat one serving of and think, "I couldn't eat another bite" (but usually manage to anyway).

This includes high-fat casseroles, such as broccoli and cheese, cream-based soups, mashed potatoes, potatoes au gratin, stuffing, and dressing. In this case, the more filling, the more fattening.

  6. Drink Less Like a Fish

  7. If your family serves wine during Thanksgiving dinner, try to limit yourself to just the first glass. A few glasses add up to hundreds of calories. (According to Calorie Count Plus, three glasses of white wine serve up 210 calories!) Plus, drinking can actually stimulate your appetite, make you more likely to disregard portion control and less likely to say no to the dessert table. So after one glass, swap that glass of wine for a glass of water.

  8. Don't Sleep it Off

Triptophan is a worthy adversary, but fight the urge to nap the evening away. Moving more than normal -- whether it be a game of touch football in the front yard, or a marathon of shopping on Black Friday -- will help compensate for any little indulgences that slipped by over the last couple of days.

  9. Eat Turkey Until You Never Want to See Another Turkey

All those leftovers don't have to spell diet disaster. Turkey is a healthful, lean protein source that's perfect for healthy meals. Slices of turkey (without skin and gravy) with whole grain rice and steamed veggies makes a low-cal, well-rounded meal -- you can even save room for a tiny slice of Mom's pumpkin pie.

A turkey sandwich on whole wheat with reduced-fat mayo, lettuce, tomato and baby carrots is a nutritious, diet-friendly lunch to use up more leftovers, or to enjoy year-round.

  10. Maintaining is Marvelous

Don't worry about losing weight during the holidays. Resolve instead to maintain what you've already accomplished. In the end, staying right where you are on the scale is better than putting on a few pounds. Don't stress out over no net loss -- celebrate a lack of gain.

One More Thing...

Don't let yourself think a few Turkey Day slip-ups are cause to give up your weight loss efforts altogether. It's rather tempting to go back to eating all of your old favorite fattening foods after you've blown your diet a few meals in a row.

But remember, you will look and feel better come January 1 if you get right back on the wagon and return to your new, improved eating habits. Happy Thanksgiving! "

Rosamond, Ca overview

Elevation:  2415 ft

Population:  Approx. 16000

Located 15 miles west of Edwards Air Force Base and about 20 miles north of Palmdale, Rosamond is an unincorporated community in the southeastern part of Kern County.  Rosamond is one of the Fastest-growing communities in the AV.  Home prices are lower then they are in Palmdale and Lancaster.

Although Rosamond has a robust growth profile, the town offers a slower pase and is a wonderful place to raise children.  There are several new businesses and developments being built in Rosamond.

Rosamond was established in 1877, owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad.  It got it's name aftger the daughter of one of the railroad company's officials.  There are two main historical influences that you can see today, gold mining and the airforce base.  Gold, was discovered in 1894 here, and accounted for the majority of Rosamond's early growth.  The old Tropico Mine, originally the Lida Mine and is still standing in Rosamond, employed many ot the town's residents.  The Muroc Army Air Corps Base, now Edwards, provided additional income for the community.  The base is the Antelope Valley's largest employer and economic mainstay.  Many of the residents commute to the south.

Rosamond boasts two main attractions, Willow Springs International Raceway and the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound.  These bring lots of visitors each year.  Another feature is Rosmond Sky Park, an upscale houing development that offers pilots an opportunity to park their planes in backyard hangars.  The park has runway access to Rosamond Airport.

Rosamond is a Great little bedroom community.  I have lived here for 9 years and love it.  There are 5 new housing tracts with several more being talked about.  I am sure that you will love what you see.
